Kenmare is a charming town nestling at the foot of the Cork and Kerry mountains in the south west of Ireland. The town founded in 1670 by Sir William Petty, is a planned town and preserves many of its original features. The Irish Tourist officially recognized the historical, cultural and environmental significance of Kenmare and bestowed upon it the title of Kerry's first Heritage Town. Situated at the head of Kenmare Bay, it is an ideal centre from which to tour the internationally famous Ring of Kerry or the rugged Ring of Beara.
The town with a population of 2,070 people today, bustles with restaurants, bars, hotels, guesthouses, and is renowned for its Gourmet food, superb accommodation and breathtaking scenery. The lightly coloured shops display their unique local crafts of jewellery, pottery, knitwear, weaving, musical instruments and of course, the world famous lace which you can still see being made today in the Heritage Centre.
